Run away with your kid to college this fall!

This is not as far fetched as it sounds, if you have a favorite offspring (sometimes it is hard to choose) who is looking to go or transfer to a California State University, or University of California school they can actually attend either one right here in the Coachella Valley at the Palm Desert campuses of CSU San Bernardino, or UC Riverside. So run away with you kid to college, and walk in to a great job with Riverside County in the Desert.

The Desert Jobs web pages have a Colleges and Universities listing that has contact information for academic institutions with campuses in the Coachella Valley.  While the kid hits the books on the weekends, you can hit the links, or improve your serve on the courts.  Riverside County is the largest single employer in the Desert and has 300 – 400 Desert jobs available at any one time where you can make full use your skills and the experience you have gained over the years.

Since blogs are often the preferred format for a younger demographic, I thought first about using a lead-in something like this, “Take Mom and Pop to college with you this fall.”  I quickly discounted that idea remembering two very important things:  1) In many cases our kids go to college to get away from their parents; and 2) we parents are the ones to spring for a good chuck, if not all of the tuition bill, so why have to pay for housing, too?  They just end up moving back home for the summer, bringing with them 9 months of dirty laundry, and some disgusting boy or girl friend.  Tell me, why let them out of your sight in the first place.  (Sorry, I do have a tendency to get worked up about certain things.)

On the other hand, if you have a child that is a born athlete or academic and is going off to college with a full scholarship, there is not much you can do about.  In this case I put the question to you, “Why are you sitting in that huge old, expensive to maintain and heat, house when you could be in a golf course condo in the Coachella Valley, standing in the gallery during the Bob Hope Classic, and working for Riverside County?   Well, I think it defies logic, but then again I might be a little prejudice.

In any case, tell them to dump the disgusting boy/girl friend (which they probably hooked up with just to annoy you anyway), and explain to them that they are too young to get that involved in a relationship.  Assure them they will meet many more wonderful people in their future college years and life experience, and you as a parent will know when the right one come along!
