Surf Sounds in the Desert?

The Palm Springs Art Museum had the creator of the Beach Boys sound, Brian Wilson, front an eight piece band to formally kick off the Season at their companion Annenberg Theater.  The sold out crowd was dancing in their seats to such hits as “Good Vibrations” and “California Girls”. Brian performed a total of 23 Beach Boy songs.

I am from the “Surf Sound” era, but missed the concert and only got to hear the glowing reports afterwards. The Indian Casinos import a lot of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s pop acts to this area, but this is the first time a nonprofit institution has offered its homage to the sounds that many of us grew up with.

The Beach Boys created their sound some 45 years ago, it is hard to believe that much time has pasted, but it has. Whereas, Elvis didn’t fare too well, the Beach Boys seemed (from my memory) to quite comfortably coexist with the British envision. Probably, because of their uniquely Americana sound that could easily be duplicated by any kid with a garage band, but no other group at that time could compete with it for niche that it had created for its self.

I have two sons in their early twenties, and oddly enough they both revere anything 80’s. I don’t know why music from that decade is so fascinating to them. I lived through it and can’t really point to anything remarkable, whereas I can in the 60’s and 70’s music because so many styles of popular music collided at one time.

You know you are getting old when the music from your generation is on one of those television infomercial compilation sets for three easy payments of only $19.95, call now! (Allow 3 – 4 weeks for delivery.)

If you are coming to the Desert as a day tripper, for a weekend, or for a longer vacation you can check some of the more popular venues in advance to see who is appearing. At any one time we will unusually be able to satisfy a broad range of musical tastes.

Kind of shifting gears, no matter what music is loaded in your iPod, or what CD is sitting in your car player, if you are an attorney I would particularly like to hear from you on the things that would attract a lawyer to this area. You could be a great help to me with a recruiting plan I am trying to work out. Send reply with confidential contact information and it will not appear in the blog. Everyone else just wait and you will get your turn, I promise.

I haven’t been very faithful of late to my “world’s greatest blog closing line contest,” so to put matters straight I leave you the following admonition: “You'll get what's coming to you ... unless mailed.”
